After being a part of a trio with her sisters Trina and Towanda Braxton, Tamar Braxton went on to begin her solo career with a debut self-titled album in 2000 under Dreamworks Records. The album was a commercial failure, and Tamar was later dropped from the label. Like many younger siblings, Tamar turned to her big sister Toni for a bit of assistance. She appeared on a few of Toni's solo albums as a backup vocalist and co-writer, including the popular 2001 hit More than a Woman and 2005's Libra.

Tamar bounced between labels until she landed at Epic Records in 2013, just after the release of her second album, Love and War, in 2012. The album's title track was a hit on the Billboard charts, spending nine weeks at number one on the Adult R&B Songs chart, peaking at 57 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and reaching number 13 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

The album was a commercial success on the charts both nationally and internationally, and Tamar used the momentum from her music to jump into her next career venture.
